Happy May Day Everyone!

Do you know what May Day is?

It’s a celebration of the coming Spring time.

Do you know where this holiday originated from?

It was a cultural celebration mostly in countries in the northern hemisphere.

Do you know how May Day was originally celebrated?

The towns people placed a tall pole up in the middle of town or a local park. They attached long colored ribbons to the top of the pole.

Then young girls dressed in white or in their national or local cultural garb or dress, each held a ribbon as they danced around the pole to local music or singing.

Here are a few titles you might enjoy with May Day in mind.

And DON’T FORGET that MOTHER’S DAY

is on MAY 13 and

MEMORIAL DAY is MAY 28th.

Have a great month and don’t forget to READ.

Friends’ Rummage Sale and LCL’s Spring Plant Exchange was a Huge Success!

THE RUMMAGE SALE and

SPRING PLANT EXCHANGE THIS

PAST WEEKEND WERE BOTH HUGE SUCCESSES!

to everyone who helped out, including: our local citizens of Linwood and the surrounding areas who donated items, those who donated money for the items, and Kathy Reno who held the Spring Plant Exchange and brought in most of the plants.

Many thanks also go out to all of the members of the “Friends of the Linwood Community Library” who worked so hard planning, organizing and holding this event to benefit our Library and its many programs. Because of everyone’s hard work and generous donations, the “Friends” group were able to raise $1354.00.

Again, THANK YOU to everyone who participated in one way or another to help our community libary at this event.

You are all terrific!

Also, the left over items from the sale were donated to several different charities in and around our area.

Most of those items were donated to the “Big Brothers & Big Sisters of KC” program.

Some items were donated to the Lawrence Humane Society, some went a local church for their charity holiday sale, some to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, and some went to the Goodwill store. Plus many of the books left over went back to our Library for future book sales.

All in all, the donated items all went to good causes,

and YOU made that happen.

If you would like to be part of our “Friends” group, please stop in at the Library and fill out a membership form, or call the Library at: (913) 301-3686 and we will mail one to you. You can either leave the completed form and your annual dues there, or mail it to us at the address on the form.

It’s time and we’re OPEN FOR BUSINESS, for the Friends of the Library RUMMAGE SALE – at the Community Building, 105 E. Third St. (S/E corner with Main St.), in downtown Linwood, Kansas.

Friday, 8 AM – 8 PM & Saturday 8 AM to 3:00 PM.

We have a hoard of items: a plethora of clothes, a myriad of books, audio books, CDs, movies on videos, DVDs, casette tapes, nic nacs, hats, purses, household goods, baby items, toys, sports items, SMALL furniture & SMALLappliances, car repair items, holiday decorations, vacume cleaners, pictures and home decor galore, plus much more!!!

OUTGOING DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE - by Sue Peavy

The Linwood Community Library is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. The library became a tax-supported district library in 1977. In 2007, it became the first library district in Kansas to increase its service area through a vote of the residents, and now includes all of Reno and Sherman Townships in southern Leavenworth County.

Since coming to the Library to be your Library Director in the summer of 2007, I have been blessed to have a wonderful staff and Library Board to help the library continue to move forward. Some days were challenging, others rewarding, a few, routine, but for (almost) five years I have looked forward to coming to the library each day. Now I am entering a new phase in my life as I retire from serving as your director. Please know that I cherish the friendship that you have offered me, and appreciate the support that you have given to the library.

WHAT’S AT THE LIBRARY FOR YOU?

Do you know what the Linwood Community Library has waiting for you besides books? There are lots of computer games, Wii Games, DVD Movies (free – no rental fee), audio books, magazines, and computers to use.

Did you know that you could register to vote at the Library? We have lots of services here locallly for your use, such as: a free Notary Public service, Fax Machine (send and receive faxes), Copier (up to 11 X 17) (Blk & white .10 cents, Color – .50 cents.), High Speed Internet, Wi Fi Spot, Pre School Story Time, Summer Reading Program, SRS Access Point, local history, geneology resources, and local community events. Plus, lots of friendly faces to help you.

You don’t have drive very far for some of the services you need.

There’s so much you can do at the Library.
